The Jamaica Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists family is mourning the passing of former Administrator, Pastor Meremoth Weir, on Sunday, July 27, 2025. He was 95.
Affectionately known to many as “Elder Weir” and fondly called “Glady” by close friends and family, Pastor Weir was a man deeply loved and respected both within and beyond the walls of the church.
His impactful journey in ministry began in 1958 as a Ministerial Intern in the East Jamaica Conference, where he served with distinction and unyielding commitment. His faithful service led to his election as President of the East Jamaica Conference in 1985, a role in which he provided visionary leadership.
His influence extended beyond the Conference when he was called to serve in the then West Indies Union Conference, first as Executive Secretary for a decade, and subsequently as Director of Communication and Public Affairs and Religious Liberty. His soft but eloquent voice significantly strengthened the church’s public presence and advocacy efforts.
Pastor Weir dedicated 42 years to his denomination, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership and commitment to the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He retired in February 2001, concluding a career marked by integrity, wisdom, and a deep love for God, His people, and His mission.
A man of academic excellence, Pastor Weir earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from West Indies College (now Northern Caribbean University) and a Master of Divinity from Andrews University in Michigan, USA. In recognition of his lifelong service, he was later awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from NCU.
Known for his kind heart, his love for prayer, and his wide-ranging interests, including farming, reading, philosophy, physics, and swimming, Pastor Weir brought joy and wisdom to every conversation. He was also a proud left-hander, known for his caring spirit and delightful sense of humor.
Reflecting on Pastor Weir’s passing, President of the Jamaica Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, Pastor Everett Brown, remarked:
“I join the family of the late Pastor Meremoth Weir and the wider SDA Church family in Jamaica to mourn the passing of a truly stalwart Christian gentleman, who had dedicated over four decades of his life to serving the Adventist Church in Jamaica in numerous pastoral and administrative roles.”
“He was a remarkably gifted and humble teacher and preacher of the doctrines of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. His unwavering faith in the promises of Jesus, his commitment to serve God and people, indeed, his legacy of selfless Christian service, lives on as an inspiration to his family, pastoral colleagues, and the church at large,” Brown added.
Pastor Weir is survived by his devoted wife, Beatrice Weir, and three daughters: Mercedes Weir, Marilyn Weir-Smythe, and Marchelle Rachel. He was predeceased by his son, Milton Weir.
He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Derrick Hall, Jonathan Hall, Myles Rachel, and Keava Rachel, as well as his loving siblings, Lois Miller and Garnet Weir, and many nieces and nephews who held him in high esteem.
The Jamaica Union family joins in prayer with their loved ones and the wider church community as we celebrate a life well-lived in service to the Master and hold fast to the blessed hope of the resurrection, where death, too, shall die.
The funeral service for the late Pastor Weir will take place on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 10 a.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church at Northern Caribbean University (NCU).
